How to Save a Instagram Video as MP4

For public Reels and video posts you are allowed to keep.

Instagram's bookmark icon only saves a post inside the app, and the app never hands you the file itself. When a Reel or video post is public and you have a right to keep a copy, the browser route is quicker: copy the link, parse it, and download a plain MP4 that plays anywhere.

This guide covers the whole flow on the Instagram to MP4 page, including the link types that quietly fail and what to do instead.

1. Copy the post link

Open the Reel or video post itself. Tap the share icon → Copy link, or copy the address from the browser bar on desktop. The link should point to one post—a Reel URL or a /p/ post URL that contains video—not to a profile, a hashtag page, or your saved collection.

2. Paste and parse

  1. Open the Instagram to MP4 page.
  2. Paste the link into the field and press Parse.
  3. Check the title and thumbnail so they match the post you meant to save.

Stories, private accounts, and subscription-only content sit behind access controls, and the tool does not sign in or bypass them, so those links return an error by design.

3. Pick a quality

Instagram uploads usually expose one or two resolutions, and the parser lists what the source actually returns. For a phone copy, 720p or 1080p is the practical choice; the tool never invents a higher resolution than the original upload has.

4. Save the file

Tap Download on the option you want and keep the page open until the file completes. When video and sound arrive as separate streams, combining them takes a moment.

5. Stories and private posts

Story URLs expire quickly and are tied to a private viewer list, so they are not supported here. If you need a copy of your own Story, use the save option inside the Instagram app while it is still live. For anything from a private account, ask the account owner for a copy instead of looking for a workaround—there isn't one here, on purpose.

The parser lives on its own tool page, and the same flow covers other platforms if your clip is hosted elsewhere.

Frequently asked questions

How do I save an Instagram Reel to my phone?

Copy the Reel's link with Share → Copy link, paste it on the Instagram to MP4 page, press Parse, pick a quality, and download. The file lands in your Downloads folder.

Can I download a Story or a private account's video?

No. Stories and private accounts sit behind access controls, and the tool does not sign in or bypass them. Public Reels and video posts are the supported case.

Why does my Instagram link return an error?

Usually the link points to a profile or story rather than a single public post, or the post has been deleted or region-locked. Links behind a login also fail, by design.

Where does the saved Reel end up on Android?

In the Downloads folder. Most gallery and Files apps index it automatically, so the video shows up alongside your camera roll.
